The habit of constantly making excuses can have manifold impacts, varying from laughingly being commented to as fly-by-night to being considered overly suspicious and obsessed. You may be brave, up-front and well-respected in each aspect of your professional, personal and family life, but if you’re always covering up your inadequacy with excuses, your negative reputation is bound to develop. Excuses develop in defense of covering up some kind of weakness.

Psychologists have found that people use all sorts of self-handicapping strategies to protect their self-esteem. The first is not trying to your best. This is a lucid policy. Not trying to your best means you will fail. And if you fail here is the excuse ready. The main victims of excuses are the people having lofty ego. If you are a super hero then only you can succeed without trying hard.

So the person is influenced by his own talent and more likely they demonstrate that it is very easy for them. Hence self esteemed people are very likely to be prone to self-handicapping. Many of us get confused between excuse and explanation. But an excuse decreases motivation. Excuse is when you blame others for your own fault. When you make look like poor results are better in comparison of others. An excuse is when you don’t expect much from future.

Maybe you’re known as someone who breaks promises; places blame on others, or don’t accept responsibility for actions or errors. In any case, your standing is the thing that can’t be counted on.
